Links and stuff

Funniest post I’ve read all day.

Is the French approach to Mali the new way of combating Al Qaeda? Well, it has its advantages, but we’ll have to take a wait and see approach before making a long term judgment.  And for the articles approval of French military power, don’t forget it would have been impossible without extensive US airlift. You did know the US was providing airlift, right? You had to have seen it all over the news, right?

Makers Mark came to their senses.

When your entire business model is built on the quality of your product, never mess with the quality of your product.

John the Armorer takes us for a brief tour of the National World War I Museum (in Kansas City, of all places). I’m just not sure if the pictures are from the museum or John’s basement.

I question if it isn’t too little too late for Maker’s Mark. People will remember “we will water it down” more than the correction. And others will suspect that the retraction is a lie, and they will swear up and down that they can “taste the difference”. I still suspect this will cost them business, regardless of any apologizes and reversals. And I’m not being a conspiracy theorist here (though others will be). For me, this is more a case of, “a lie gets halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its pants.

The UK’s limited supply of C-17’s were used in addition to ours for airlifting the French to Mali. Darn good thing it wasn’t halfway around the globe. Regarding Makers Mark I am reminded of the “matchmaker” in The Quiet Man when he says “…when I drink whiskey, I drink whiskey and when I drink water, I drink water.” That comment came when asked if he wanted water in his whiskey while at the pub.

I want to echo how fantastic the WWI museum is. I’ve been twice. For an old wargamer (Jutland and 1914 from Avalon Hill, etc.) it was very satisfying to see the superb presentation

My father’s father was a Corporal in Company M, 38th Infantry, 3rd Inf Division. He defended Paris on the Marne River. I never heard any of his stories.

  6. Actually, there was a story in the (Tacoma)News Tribune, with pictures on Frenchies off-loading from a 62nd Airlift Wing C-17 out of McChord.
