Building an aircraft tough and steadfast enough to operate safely from an aircraft carrier is extremely difficult. Sadly, many of the aircraft sent to operate from carriers were not good enough, with the result that thousands of men died trusting their lives to an inappropriate machine. Here’s a list of ten aircraft that should never have been sent to sea....

Outstanding treatise on aircraft of this particular venue. I personally prefer piston power aircraft from WWII on and consider myself reasonably able to identify aircraft, but WOW….some of these were new to me. I liked the old Cutlas and was disappointed as I researched them to find them of questionable capability. Thank-you.
As pointed out on Hush_Kit, the Cutlass and Demon could have been a whole lot better had they had decent powerplants. In many respects, they were sophisticated for their day, with missile armament, nuclear capability, all-weather capability etc. Actually, engine problems held a lot of these aircraft back: the immature Python turboprop in the Wyvern, and badly thought-out combination/mixed powerplants in the Fireball and the Yak-38.
